Social networks have been the scene of particularly serious accusations in recent days. Australian actress and model Ruby Rose claimed on Monday, April 13, to have been sexually assaulted by singer Katy Perry, in a post published under a Complex magazine content. “Katy Perry sexually assaulted me at the Spice Market club in Melbourne. We don’t care what she thinks,” she wrote, referring to incidents that would date back to about twenty years. She mentioned that it took “almost two decades before talking about it publicly.”
Katy Perry appeared in Rome after the sexual assault allegations. While these accusations were spreading widely, the American artist appeared publicly in Rome, in a rather unexpected context. During her visit to the Italian capital, she shared on Instagram a video taken in front of the famous Trevi Fountain. Following the tradition of visitors throwing a coin to make a wish, the singer chose to throw her credit card into the water. She was discreet under a hoodie, among the tourists, capturing the scene before posting other photos of her outing, including in front of St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican and the Minerva Basilica, steps away from the Pantheon.
Some may have been surprised by Katy Perry’s appearance, all smiles, while the actress, known from the series Orange Is the New Black, gave a detailed account of the scene she described. She claims that the singer would have “leaned over”, then “pulled off her underwear” and would have “rubbed her disgusting v*gina against [Ruby Rose’s] face until [she] suddenly opened [her] eyes and [she] vomited heavily on her”. She also added: “Even though I am very grateful for holding on long enough to find my voice, it shows how much trauma and sexual assault can impact a person.” Despite the gravity of her remarks, Ruby Rose indicated that she does not intend to file a lawsuit.
Katy Perry’s camp responded promptly. Through a spokesperson, the singer firmly contested the actress’s statements: “The accusations circulating on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are also dangerous and irresponsible lies.” The statement added that the actress has “repeatedly publicly made serious accusations on social media against various people, accusations that have been repeatedly denied by the people involved.”
Despite Katy Perry’s desire to move on, the case continues to stir strong reactions online.
