Almost eight years after the release of the last installment, Metro Exodus, the series of horrific first-person shooters is set to welcome a new episode. Metro 2039 will be released in winter 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series.

Developed by the Ukrainian studio 4A Games, the Metro saga began in 2010 with the adaptation of Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel Metro 2033 into a video game. Since then, two other games have been released, Metro Last Night (2013) and Metro Exodus (2019). The studio’s life has been greatly impacted by the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Now split between Kyiv and Malta, the teams promise the darkest episode of the series yet, highlighting the horror of tyranny, the cost of silence, and the price of freedom. The original author, now in exile after criticizing the Russian invasion, once again participated in crafting the storyline.

During an Xbox First Look event, Metro 2039 was presented for the first time. The game will retain everything that made its predecessors successful, offering a solo first-person shooter adventure. Metro 2039 will be released in winter 2026 or early 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series.

Four years after the events of Metro Exodus and 25 years after the nuclear apocalypse forced humanity to live underground, we return to the cold, dark corridors of the Moscow Metro. Dubbed The Stranger, our new hero is a recluse living on the surface, away from the city. However, plagued by violent nightmares and a dark past, he is compelled to leave his exile and return to the ruins of Moscow and its metro.

Underground, he discovers a community stifled by a totalitarian regime, the Novoreich, ruled with an iron fist by a new “Führer”, the legendary Spartan named Hunter. Using the pretext of a war against new enemies from the surface, Hunter meticulously establishes his tyranny through fear and propaganda. To heal the wounds of the past and save the survivors from this grip, our hero must confront Hunter, once his ally.

After a more open episode in which the saga’s hero, Artyom, traversed post-apocalyptic Russia to find a new home away from radiation, Metro 2039 will return to the series’ origins, alternating between the claustrophobic ambiance of the Moscow metro tunnels and the irradiated surface ruins.

In addition to action sequences where mutants must be faced, Metro 2039 will also be an exploration and survival game. Equipment management will be vital, and keeping an eye on radiation levels by regularly checking the watch will be crucial.

For the first time in a Metro game, our hero will not be silent, and his character will be fully voiced. This will allow players to delve more deeply into his torments, which seem to be at the heart of the storyline. From a technical standpoint, the game will once again run on the studio’s proprietary engine, the 4A Engine, promising to be at the cutting edge, especially in terms of lighting and overall ambiance.

Metro 2039 is set to be released in winter 2026 (or early 2027) on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series.
