Gamer communities are now much more than just groups of players: they have become real social spaces. What unites them is the passion for gaming, but also sharing experiences, strategies, and emotions.

From guilds in MMORPGs to competitive esports communities, to casual players gathered on online platforms, these groups take on various forms. Their scale is considerable, reaching millions of people around the world.

Beyond entertainment, these communities play a role in building identities, creating bonds, and fostering mutual aid. They also raise societal issues: inclusion, toxicity, and cultural influence. Video games thus become a mirror of our contemporary social interactions.

The documentary “Knit’s Island, the endless rule” clearly demonstrates this. We discuss it with Greg Carette, video game and esports thematic expert for iXP RTBF and Fanny Barnabé, lecturer at the University of Namur and co-founder of Liège Game Lab, member of the Interuniversity Laboratory of Games and Virtual Worlds.

Filmed entirely in a video game, the documentary “Knit’s Island” is now available for free on RTBF Auvio.
