Adèle Haenel, 37, has closed a chapter in her career. During an appearance on the show “C dans l’air” on France 5, she confirmed that she will not return to the film industry, criticizing it for being deeply problematic and not learning from its mistakes. She expressed her concerns about the industry’s stories, which she believes perpetuate racism and sexism, stating that she does not want to be a part of it.
Haenel, known for her involvement in the liberation of speech in French cinema, spoke about how certain works normalize harmful representations, including those related to childhood. She has now shifted her focus to activism off-screen.
Her recent appearance marked a subtle but significant comeback after her public absence since 2021. Haenel broke her silence following the conviction of director Christophe Ruggia for sexual assault when she was a minor. While feeling fortunate to have seen justice, she questioned whether this feeling of luck revealed a deeper injustice.
Haenel emphasized the importance of moving beyond her personal experience to advocate for broader social issues. She aims to contribute to a society where “all lives are livable,” denouncing the current state of the legal system and expressing her commitment to fighting against a world moving towards fascism.
