During CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas, Steven Spielberg warned the film industry about its increasing dependence on existing franchises and licenses. According to him, this model could lead Hollywood into a creative deadlock.

The 79-year-old director presented a new trailer for “Disclosure Day” on Wednesday, April 22. The film’s plot remained secretive but involves visitors from another planet and a government conspiracy to conceal their arrival, as reported by Variety.

Spielberg urged Hollywood to continue investing in original films rather than remakes, sequels, and spin-offs. He stated, “If we only produce known franchises and known intellectual property of known brands, we will end up hitting a wall.” He emphasized the importance of offering the audience visual stories in any form but stressed the need for more original storytelling.

In another recommendation, Spielberg suggested that films should have longer theatrical runs before being released on demand platforms, a strategy Universal will adopt for “Disclosure Day.” He commended Universal’s decision to extend the theatrical window from 17 to 45 days.

Spielberg’s film will hit theaters on June 10, featuring Emily Blunt as a meteorologist and Josh O’Connor as a man holding evidence of extraterrestrial contact. The director expressed his belief that the film will provide answers and raise many questions, urging the audience to fasten their seat belts for the journey ahead.
