Starting this Saturday with the Tigres, André-Pierre Gignac received an exceptional tribute from the 40,000 supporters of the Mexican club.

Since his arrival in 2015 from the Tigres’ side, André-Pierre Gignac quickly became a national hero. In eleven years at the club, the 40-year-old Frenchman has won 11 titles including five national championships and a Concacaf Champions League (2020), being the player of the season in 2016. Thanks to his goal-scoring ability and exceptional finishing, Gignac has also become the club’s all-time leading scorer with 222 goals in 439 matches. Adored by an entire nation, the French striker may have played his last match with the Tigres this Saturday. Victory over FC Mazatlan (5-1) thanks in particular to Angel Correa’s outstanding performance, the former Atletico Madrid player (one goal, four assists), Monterrey’s club also paid a heartfelt tribute to Gignac. Exceptional tifos from the 40,000 spectators at the Estadio Universitario.

A giant tribute to the legend Gignac

Some questioned the choice of the French striker’s Mexican exile. Gignac, however, had everything planned out. At Tigres, the former Marseille player found a family and a supporting public. Proof of this was shown this Saturday on the last day of the closing championship. Before giving way on the hour mark, Gignac saw the stadium adorned with a giant tifo in the 10th minute, like the number he has worn since joining the club. Behind the goals, a French flag with the famous number 10 was displayed on one side, and on the other, the message “Gracias Gignac” was written just above the player’s face and jersey. On the side stand, a Mexican flag was also visible with the initials “APG”.

While the club is still engaged in the Concacaf Champions League semi-finals (April 29 and May 6 against the American franchise of Nashville), Gignac may have played his final minutes in a Tigres jersey before a well-deserved retirement.
