The world has devoted nearly $2.9 trillion (2,280 billion Swiss francs) to military spending in 2025, marking an eleventh consecutive year of growth amid multiple conflicts, according to a report released on Monday. The three main contributors – the United States, China, and Russia – accounted for over half of the total, at $1,480 billion (1,163.5 billion Swiss francs).

The increase was 2.9% in a year despite a decline in American military spending, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) report.

This decrease was largely offset by progressions in Europe and Asia in “a new year marked by wars and escalating tensions,” explained Sipri researcher Lorenzo Scarazzato to AFP.

“The military burden” – or the share of the global GDP dedicated to military spending – is the highest since 2009. “Everything indicates that the world feels less secure and is thinking more about strengthening its armed forces to address the global context,” noted the researcher.
