The ceasefire in the Middle East was jeopardized after the American response on Friday, May 8. Three ships were attacked by Iranian forces. Donald Trump threatens violent retaliation. The US military claims to have struck Iran after this attack, targeting military installations. Despite this escalation, the US president reassures firmly: “They played with us, we wiped them out. They played. I call it a trifle. I will tell you when there are no more ceasefires,” Donald Trump stated.
On the Iranian side, the tone is accusatory. Tehran asserts that the United States had already violated the ceasefire after the attack on one of their tankers, and denounces strikes carried out in southern Iran. “Following the attack by American military aggressors against an Iranian tanker, enemy units operating in the Strait of Hormuz area were targeted by Iranian missile fire,” announced Iranian television.
The issue of the Strait of Hormuz remains at the heart of tensions. Earlier in the day, the United States and several Gulf countries raised the issue at the UN. “The developments underscored the importance of maintaining this strategic, secure, fully open maritime passage,” highlighted Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, Bahrain’s permanent representative.
Iran continues to exert pressure and intensifies the threat by formalizing a toll principle for crossing the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf. Nearly 1,500 ships are still blocked according to the International Maritime Organization.
