Another day, another gaming price hike

Hey, do you remember when the Switch 2 first launched and all anyone could talk about was how expensive it was? Don’t worry, because Nintendo heard you loud and clear: the price of their hardware is going up once again.

Hundredth verse same as the first, really. I’m really excited to see what scientific contrivances Nintendo has come up with to defeat the universal law of entropy, because electronics appreciating instead of depreciating as time goes on defies all known laws of physics.

According to them, the reasons are simple:

In light of changes in market conditions, and after considering the global business outlook, Nintendo will revise the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) of the Nintendo Switch 2 system and Nintendo Switch systems in Japan […] Given that the impact of various changes in market conditions is expected to extend over the medium to long term, price revisions are also planned outside Japan as described below.

If you live in the United States, Switch 2 systems will now run you a cool $500, up from $450, starting September of this year. The price of Nintendo Switch Online memberships will also be going up in the near future, although Nintendo didn’t mention by how much or when to expect it.

It’s fine, though, because they “sincerely apologize for the impact these price revisions may have on our customers and other stakeholders.” While I’m aware that there are greater economic factors at play here, I also don’t believe for a second that these prices are going to come down even after they abate.
