Two years without Lyon on the podium feels like an eternity. Crowned champions of the French Cup since 2024, and even absent from the final won by Paris FC last year, the Fenottes ended this drought by dominating Paris Saint-Germain (4-1) on Sunday, May 10 at the Hainaut stadium in Valenciennes. Initially held at bay by determined Parisians, OL Lyonnes found a breakthrough thanks to an individual effort from Melchie Dumornay, who outplayed four somewhat passive opponents before slipping the ball between Mary Earps’ legs (23rd minute).
The Lyon wingers then took charge of putting their team out of reach: on a beautiful cross from Jule Brand, Vicki Becho first scored with a header, after hitting the bar (34th), then she scored a second goal with a superb outside foot strike, again from a service by the German (40th). Despite their good intentions, the PSG players could only narrow the gap through Merveille Kanjinga (62nd), before Lyon extended their lead thanks to Lindsey Heaps (75th), on the rebound of a free-kick. Present in all French Cup finals since 2020 but already frustrated by Paris FC last year, the Parisians have not beaten their Lyon rivals since December 2022 (13 defeats and one draw).
The Paris FC players, who will face Lyon in the semifinals of the championship playoff next Saturday, could have one last chance against OL Lyonnes this season if they win, and if Lyon eliminates FC Nantes. The Lyon players, who will face FC Barcelona in the Champions League final on Saturday, May 23, are still in the running for a triple that they have not achieved since 2020, and even a quadruple by adding the new League Cup, which they won against Paris in March (1-0).
