Clément Jodocius is the director of the Cinémoviking in Saint-Lô (Manche), a cinema with nine screens. The year 2026 looks to be a prosperous one for the cinema. Let’s find out more.

The year 2025 was challenging for the cinema. How has the first half of 2026 been for you locally?

It’s completely different from 2025. We had a very good start to the year, with good attendance, except maybe in April when the sunny weather kept people away from the theaters. We are seeing an increase of 27% to 28% compared to last year.

How do you explain this strong start to the season compared to 2025?

The main reason is the presence of films that are attracting the audience, unlike in 2025 when there were few releases. At the beginning of this year, films like “Le Marsupilami” and “Michael,” the biopic about Michael Jackson, filled the theaters.

How does the rest of the year look?

Even better, with a number of highly anticipated films like “De Gaulle,” the two-part biopic, “Scary Movie,” “Toy Story 5,” “Minions,” “Spider-Man,” “La Pat’Patrouille,” and the new Spielberg. In November and December, there will be so many major releases that I don’t know how I will fit them all in, even with nine screens!

What are these end-of-year films?

The new “Avengers,” “Dune 3,” “Jumanji 4,” the new Disney, the latest Asterix… It’s incredible how many releases there are at the same time, especially compared to 2025 when it was as if the year didn’t exist for the cinema. In terms of attendance, we did worse than in 2021, a year affected by Covid. Since the release of “Avatar 3” in December 2025, the audience has returned to the cinemas. They saw the trailers and thought, “That looks good, let’s go to the cinema.”

What attendance figure do you hope for in this prosperous year?

With this incredible lineup, I think we can exceed 300,000 viewers, like before Covid.

That would be great. However, we also need to consider a factor: the weather. When it’s nice outside, people naturally go to the cinema less.

What films currently showing at Cinémoviking would you recommend?

I would say “Compostelle,” with Alexandra Lamy, which has been doing well, and “Pour le plaisir,” which we just added to the schedule, with the same actress. I haven’t seen it yet, but people are laughing a lot in the theater, which is a good sign.
