Magnier third and disgusted by this scenario
The Frenchman was embarrassed by the collective fall in the finale and missed a great opportunity to score a hat trick and a third stage victory in this Giro. The light rain that arrived just before the runners passed made an ice rink as the leading group passed.
VICTORY FOR BALLERINI AFTER THIS CHAOTIC FINISH AND THIS TERRIBLE STRIKE!
The 31-year-old Italian (XDS Astana Team) can’t believe it and wins his first stage victory in the Giro ahead of Stuyven! Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step) failed in 3rd place after this terrible strike on wet ground in the final turn! The Frenchman takes important points for the cyclamen but will inevitably be disappointed!
1 km – Terrible, the huge strike ahead!
Almost everyone falls! Groenewegen crashed at the last corner, causing the favorites to fall! Ballerini and Stuyven remained in the lead!
1 km – We are going to cross the famous U!
The humidity doesn’t help in this tense finish, there are 400 m left before the finish! Groenewegen is ideally located!
2 km – The Unibet Rose Rockets always lead the peloton!
It’s very tense within the peloton, Magnier is still in the game. Let’s go for the final explanation under tension, watch out for the fall!
4 km – Ca commence à accélérer fort
It rubs shoulders against shoulders in these last terminals. A long false flat will follow in the streets of Naples going straight up to the line. The percentages are not too severe but you will have to digest the 8% slope in the last 200 meters.
7 km – Un rétrécissement pas simple à gérer
The riders accelerate on a two-lane road that is not easy to understand. Magnier is a little behind and must keep up.
11 km – It’s still well grouped 10 kilometers from the end
Things get tense and people look at each other in the peloton as the final explanation approaches. Paul Magnier is in on the action. As a reminder, the last kilometer of this 6th stage will be a U-turn at 400m, where you will need to be well placed.
In the peloton:
- A. Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious)
- I. Arrieta (UAE Team Emirates – XRG)
- G. Pellizzari (RedBull – Bora-Hansgrohe)
- J. Vingegaard (Visma Lease a Bike)
- P. Magnier (Soudal – Quick Step)
- D. Sevilla (Polti VisitMalta)
15 km – One less crew for Groenewegen
Puncture for Matyas Kopecky (Unibet Rose Rockets), one of the Dutch sprinter’s pilot fish.
22 km – It’s less compact when passing the Red Bull kilometer
Tarozzi launched the sprint at 400 m but the Italian was swallowed up by a surprising group of runners. Filippo Magli (Bardiani) takes this intermediate sprint – one of many in this Giro – and the 6 bonus seconds, ahead of Ludovico Crescioli (Polti VisitMalta) and Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto – Intermarché).
25 km – Vesuvius in the field, the Red Bull sprint in the sights
It’s going to start to get tense, the runners have been running along the outskirts of Naples for a few kilometers and getting closer to the city, between sea and mountains. The “RB KM” is in two terminals.
31 km – We are patient before the volcanic explanation
The riders are getting closer to the Red Bull kilometer, still no counter-attack on the horizon. Magnier’s teammates do the work up front.
37 km – That’s it, the junction is made
The peloton swallowed up the four Italians who escaped! This is the end of the solo act of Tarozzi, Marcellusi, Bais and Vergallito, who will have spent the day at the front of the race.
39 km – The sun is back, it should be comfortable for Naples
The weather is obviously closely scrutinized in this last part of the stage towards the finish town. But the information is rather good, with nice clearings on the horizon.
42 km – The gap has just dropped to 20 seconds
No miracle for the four in front who are gradually being eaten away by the peloton led by Soudal.
48 km – A few more points in Tarozzi’s bag, at the head in Brusciano
The Italian from Bardiani scores 12 additional points in the race for the cyclamen jersey, thanks to this intermediate sprint won in front of his 3 compatriots.
- Manuel Tarozzi – 12 pts
- Mattia Bais – 8 pts
- Martin Marcellusi – 5 pts
50 km – A young supporter does absolutely anything on the side of the road, it’s crazy!
A young man enjoys scaring the runners as the peloton passes by, with little pressure attacks. Some respond and get annoyed, the angry person even goes so far as to try to touch/push a runner… A scandalous behavior, it should be quickly found by the police in view of the images.
56 km – The peloton closes the gap a little
The rain has calmed down a little, and the breakaway of four Italians is now reduced to a 29-second gap by the peloton. The pink jersey Eulalio still leads this group.
75 km – The peloton still controls the breakaways
The arrival of rain does not disrupt the progress of the stage for the moment. There are now four Italians at the front, Vergallito, Tarozzi, Bais and Marcellusi, with around forty seconds ahead of the peloton.
78 km – The rain is back on the Giro!
As predicted, the weather is getting worse and the rain is starting to fall again. Enough to make the road slippery for the runners, who experienced a very trying 5th stage yesterday, with falls and twists and turns.
83 km – The gap increases a little for the leading group
The five men who form the group at the front accelerate a little and are now a little minute ahead of the peloton. The rain should arrive soon, many runners are already putting on their raincoats.
88 km – The escapees maintain their lead
The five leading men, Marcellusi, Tarozzi, Bais, Vergallito and Planckaert, failed to widen the gap. The peloton is right behind them, around thirty seconds behind. The runners have just passed the edge of Vesuvius, the famous volcano located in the Bay of Naples.
92 km – Rain could come back to disrupt the race
After a start to the stage in good weather, the weather is expected to get worse this afternoon in Italy. Rain is forecast on the Giro roads. Enough to fear a difficult end of the course for the runners heading to Naples.
97 km – Denz to share after the gross chute
According to Eurosport, Nico Denz was able to restart after the fall which left him knocked out for a few moments. The German from Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, who was seen by a doctor, will try to get back into the peloton.
100 km – Denz totally stunned after a fall on his head
Nico Denz falls heavily in a turn, hits the ground with his helmet and seems totally stunned. Red Bull-Bora rider Hansgrohe will be examined by a race doctor. Not sure he can leave again. Caught in his fall, Ivo Olivieira (UAE Team Emirates XGR) quickly got back on his bike and seemed to be feeling much better.
102 km – The peloton in 30 seconds of the race
The group of five escapees, Marcellusi, Tarozzi, Bais, Vergallito and Planckaert, did not manage to increase their lead over the peloton, which was 30 seconds behind.
106 km – There are now five men in the lead
As expected, Marcellusi, Tarozzi and Bais returned to Vergallito and Planckaert, the two Alpecine-Premier Tech. There are now five riders at the head of this 6th stage towards Naples, with fifty seconds ahead of the peloton.
108 km – The pursuers are getting closer to the escapees
Marcellusi, Tarozzi and Bais are getting closer to the leading duo Vergallito and Planckaert. They will soon join them.
111 km – A group of pursuers leaves the peloton
Three Italian riders, Marcellusi, Tarozzi and Bais, broke out of the fray and set off in pursuit of the leading duo from Alpecine-Premier Tech. They manage to leave the peloton behind them and rush towards Vergallito and Planckaert.
115 km – Nearly a minute ahead for the escapees
Under a sky full of clouds, the two breakaways from Alpecine-Premier Tech Vergallito and Planckaert, who skirt the rough sea, increase their lead a little and are now almost a minute behind the peloton led by Visma Lease a Bike, Bahrain Victorious or Soudal-Quick Step. Nobody seems to want to accelerate to catch them at the start of this stage.
118 km – Mild weather so far
After the downpours, wind and cold which largely disrupted the fifth stage yesterday, the riders of this Giro 2026 are entitled to much less trying conditions for the moment. There are still some gusts along the Tyrrhenian coast.
120 km – The peloton controls the pace
The peloton is not forcing itself to catch up with the breakaways Vergallito and Planckaert at the start of the stage. While the runners run along the seaside, the Alpecine-Premier Tech breakaways have a lead of around 40 seconds.
122 km – Eulalio with the pink jersey
During a difficult stage the day before, marked by heavy rain and numerous falls, the Portuguese Afonso Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious) donned the pink jersey of leader in the classification, with 2’51 ahead of the Spaniard Igor Arrieta (UAE Team Emirates XRG), who won in Potenza.
125 km – Breakaways widen the gap
Vergallito and Planckaert, the Alpecine-Premier Tech duo, are moving ahead at the front and are a little less than a minute ahead of the peloton.
128 km – Hatherly suffers a puncture
South African rider Jayco Alula suffers a puncture. He gets help along the road and leaves without too much trouble.
131 km – The Alpecine-Premier Tech on the attack
While we expected a quiet stage, two Alpecine-Premier Tech riders attack from the first kilometers. The Italian Luca Vergallito and the Belgian Edward Planckaert broke away from the peloton and launched a breakaway.
135 km – Already a fall
Several riders including Jonathann Milan and Sobrero from the Lidl-Trek team fell within the peloton. A seemingly minor fall.
137 km – No attack
No runner broke away from the peloton in these first kilometers.
Let’s go for the 6th stage of the Giro!
The runners set off for 141 km towards Naples. For the moment, the expected rain is not accompanying the runners.
Déjà du retard
The real start was to be given at 2:05 p.m. The players are relaxed while waiting for km 0 and will therefore be around ten minutes late for the real start.
Fictitious departure
Let’s go for a few kilometers into the fictitious. There are a total of 8 kilometers to cover before the actual start.
Rondel recounts his incident with the UAE Emirates-XRG car
Mathys Rondel at Eurosport, the day after his incident: “It’s a nice chain of events between the weather and what happened in the cars. I had a puncture before the intermediate sprint. I change wheels and when I come back, I’m in the UAE car and the Lidl-Trek car right in front so UAE too. I ended up in the trunk of the car, in the window. It’s definitely the best thing that could have happened to me in this situation. If I had managed to avoid it, I might have hit the car and really gone flying to the side. but reacting from 50km/h to 0km/h in a second is complicated. I think I hit with my head, the bike and my elbow. I don’t remember exactly.
Eulalio in rose mais bandé
Having fallen in the final this Wednesday, Afonso Eulalio displays bandages before the start. The Portuguese took the pink jersey after a breakaway.
Départ à 14h05
The start will be given in a few minutes.
“We know it’s going to be tense”
Warren Barguil, speaking to Eurosport, on the dangerous finale ahead: “We know that in Naples, it’s always like that. We know that it’s going to be tense.”
