What are the missions of the ambassador?

The ambassador is responsible for representing the voice of France in advocating for the rights of LGBT+ individuals, particularly in the fight for universal decriminalization. They engage in dialogue with states and regularly meet with civil society actors mobilized on these issues, often working under difficult conditions. The ambassador conveys France’s messages within the European Union and international organizations, especially the United Nations.

Coalitions to promote the rights of LGBT+ individuals

In 2016, the Coalition for Rights Equality, bringing together 45 states from different continents, was formed to coordinate international efforts in support of LGBT+ rights. The Coalition held its latest conference in Berlin on December 17-18, 2024. It is currently co-chaired by Spain and Colombia, with France actively participating.

Within the United Nations in New York and Geneva, countries most committed to this issue regularly consult to develop common positions and advocate, together, for greater consideration of the protection of LGBT+ individuals in multilateral forums.

Within the EU, exchanges between like-minded states on the rule of law and fundamental rights are regularly engaged on this subject. Additionally, an LGBTIQ subgroup, stemming from the EU High-Level Group against crimes and hate speech, was established in 2021 and now meets regularly.
