The Swiss army conducted new field tests on mini-drones in Elm (GL) on Monday, in the presence of the media. The tests aim to master these versatile devices, which can be used for reconnaissance but also turned into precision weapons.

Within the Swiss army, “drones are increasingly expanding the possibilities in terms of reconnaissance and attack,” according to the press invitation. Mini-drones are indeed used for reconnaissance and exploration missions, allowing information to be gathered without putting human lives in danger.

However, “equipped with explosive charges, they become a precision weapon capable of fighting targets,” the army describes. On the Ukrainian front, their massive use has profoundly changed the way war is waged: armies must learn to protect their troops, vehicles, equipment, and infrastructure against mini-drones.

Recruits trained in piloting:

For the Swiss army, it is important to carry out early tests to learn how to master this technology. As part of field tests in autumn 2025, the army had already trained 20 recruits in piloting First Person View (FPV) drones. This involves flying through goggles that allow the pilot to see live video feed.

Like in 2025, the tests conducted on Monday in Elm by the Center for Drone and Robotics Competence aimed to integrate FPV drone teams into combat formations. At the Wichlen shooting range, the goal was to test the interaction between drone intervention teams and combat formations, and develop intervention procedures.

The use of drones in crises and conflicts has become the norm, underscores the Swiss army. Faced with increasing threats, the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection, and Sports established the Task Force Drones in June 2024.
