The International Perfume Museum in Grasse is offering a unique exhibition in 2026 exploring the rich olfactory cultures of Asia.
In 2026, the International Perfume Museum (MIP) in Grasse invites its visitors on an exceptional sensory and cultural journey with its new thematic exhibition: “Perfumes of Asia”. This ambitious exploration looks at the olfactory traditions of the great Asian civilizations, from China to Japan, including the Indian subcontinent. The event highlights the central role of scents, both instruments of the sacred, attributes of power, stimulants for the spirit and remedies for the body. Far from being simple pleasures, perfumes reveal themselves as an artistic expression and a pillar of daily life.
Raw materials, between commerce and spirituality
The exhibition opens with a fascinating introduction to the raw materials which constitute the basis of these olfactory universes. The route presents a varied selection of substances, from the most common such as flowers and spices, to the most precious and rare. The public will thus be able to discover exceptional woods and resins, but also almost mythical ingredients such as ambergris, this intestinal concretion of the sperm whale so prized in perfumery.
This presentation of raw materials is also an opportunity to discuss the ancient trade routes that allowed their circulation across the continent. The origin, whether local or distant, of each ingredient tells a story of travel, exchanges and cultural influences that have shaped the olfactory practices of each region.
A panorama of uses, from the sacred to the profane
The heart of the exhibition is devoted to the multiple forms and uses of perfumes in Asia. Through a wide range of art objects, ancient recipes and reconstructions of historical odors, visitors will be able to understand the diversity of practices. Perfumed materials were indeed used in contexts very varied: religious rituals, cosmetic treatments, preparation of refined dishes or even the development of medicinal remedies.
This section highlights the evolutions, circulations and permanence of these uses, from Antiquity to the contemporary era. It demonstrates how, despite cultural differences, a common base of materials and gestures was able to be established and transmitted over the centuries.
An immersive experience for a dialogue of cultures
True to its vocation, the International Perfume Museum has designed a resolutely immersive scenography. The visitor’s experience is enriched by multiple sensory devices allowing them to feel the materials and compositions evoked. An abundant iconography, made up of paintings, prints and art objects, completes this dialogue between scents and history.
With “Parfums of Asia”, the MIP reconnects with its universal scope. The Grasse institution affirms its desire to promote dialogue between cultures, offering a valuable historical and anthropological perspective at a time when the perfume economy is experiencing unprecedented globalization. This exhibition promises to be a major event for all lovers of history, art and perfumery.
