Nvidia invests $6.5 billion in photonics to drive AI growth

The financial commitments made by Nvidia since March amount to 2 billion dollars (1.7 billion euros), divided between Marvell, Coherent and Lumentum. In addition, the company paid $500 million (430 million euros) to Corning for the development of cutting-edge optical connections and participated in a Series E funding round of $500 million (430 million euros) for start-up Ayer Labs.

According to Forrester analyst Alvin Nguyen, these investments allow Nvidia to expand its infrastructure without the prohibitive energy costs associated with electrical and copper systems, effectively avoiding a potential plateau in performance and scalability.

Replacing copper-based electrical signals

In practice, photonics replaces copper-based electrical signals with light to transport data between servers, memory, networking chips and GPUs. While copper remains the current industry standard due to its reliability and affordability, Morningstar analyst Brian Colello suggests optical connectivity will become essential.

As AI models develop and their use increases, the next generation of rack-scale solutions will require the enormous bandwidth that only photonics can provide.

CEO Jensen Huang has previously indicated that Nvidia is expanding its silicon photonics capabilities, integrating them into GPU-to-GPU connections and Ethernet platforms designed to connect millions of GPUs across different sites.

Competitors are also investing in photonics

Nvidia is not alone in this approach. AMD also invested in Celestial AI, Teramount and Ayer Labs, and acquired Enosemi. Likewise, Microsoft and Alphabet have provided funds to nEye. Despite this enthusiasm, widespread adoption faces obstacles. Nick Patience, of the Futurum group, notes that while the science has proven itself, mass production remains difficult. The precise alignment required for optical and silicon components makes the manufacturing process fragile, as errors often render assemblies unrepairable.
