Under the guise of a quirky space fable pieced together with whatever was at hand, “Fusées” pays tribute to the power of theater: a shaky creation, it carries its power of evocation and brings out bursts of beautiful humanity.
In a whirlwind collage, Boris and Kyril, two astronauts in socks, were doing well until they learned, on New Year’s Eve, that their return to Earth had been postponed. Locked in their spacecraft, venturing into intergalactic space, they watch their world crumble. One rejoices. The other despairs.
Jeanne Candel creates a jubilant show for children and adults, with almost nothing: no AI, no high technology, just a miniature puppet theater, a modified piano – in tune with musician Claudine Simon – and the performers’ bodies, forming a hilarious burlesque trio.
By skillfully using the tools of theater, Jeanne Candel triggers powerful images in our minds, provided we still have a childlike soul.
