The Bayern wins 2-1 against Real Madrid. It is the first victory of the Munich team against the Royals since 2012. One of the reasons for the success in the Champions League quarter-final first leg: Manuel Neuer, who secured the win with many saves and was thus awarded “Man of the Match.”
In an interview on Amazon Prime after the match, Neuer says: “It’s a shame it wasn’t 2-0 – honestly. We know how dangerous Real Madrid is. We saw that today. They had a few chances and missed some. We are happy about the victory here, but it will still be a tough and difficult task.”
The 1-2 by Kylian Mbappé in the 71st minute bothers the goalkeeper. Neuer gets a touch but cannot prevent the goal. “That’s cheeky,” he jokes about it and adds, “Then it’s a goalkeeper error (laughs).”
Neuer explains about Real Madrid stars Mbappé and Vinicius Jr.: “They are among the best players in the world. They can shoot with both feet, are very strong in dribbling, and difficult to defend. Of course, when we stand close together and have a certain number of players, it is easier. But in a one-on-one situation, it is very tough.”
The second leg is scheduled for next Wednesday at Bayern’s Allianz Arena. They will need Neuer in top form again.
