The fashion editor-in-chief doesn’t mince words! In a few days, the highly anticipated film, “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” will be released in theaters. This is the opportunity for Meryl Streep to reprise her cult role as Miranda Priestly, widely inspired by Anna Wintour. During the film’s promotion, Vogue managed to secure a joint interview with both women. The interview was conducted by Greta Gerwig, during which Anna Wintour expressed being very honored to be portrayed by Meryl Streep.
“When I heard rumors about this new film, I called Meryl to find out if it was true. I knew she would tell me if the project was good,” explains Anna Wintour. She further stated, “She had not yet read the script, so she said she would call me back. And that’s what she did. She read the script. She called me back and said, ‘Anna, I think it’s going to work.’ She didn’t tell me much about the plot, but I trusted her completely.”
Anna Wintour openly criticizes Melania Trump’s fashion style.
And during this special interview, Greta Gerwig asked Anna Wintour and Meryl Streep how they believe women can dress to display their power. “I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary to wear a strict suit to the office. Let’s take the example of women we admire: Michelle Obama, for instance,” replied Anna Wintour. She then explained that regardless of the brand she wears, the former First Lady “always remains true to herself.” “I greatly admire the new First Lady of New York, as she has such a relaxed style and wears many vintage pieces – young, modern, and completely herself. It must be said that Melania Trump, too, always remains true to herself,” she added. A well-placed jab at Melania Trump, whom Anna Wintour does not hold in high esteem.
It is worth mentioning that Anna Wintour has always refused to let Melania Trump grace the cover of Vogue, arguing that the then First Lady did not fit with their editorial line. This decision was seen as a snub by the principal party involved, who did not miss pointing it out.
Meryl Streep also weighed in on a controversial incident involving Melania Trump’s coat.
“When Melania Trump wore a coat with the message ‘I really don’t care, do u?’ while visiting detained migrant children, I have so much to say on this subject. I think the strongest message our current First Lady conveyed was through her coat,” she declared. At the time, the First Lady defended herself by stating in her memoirs that the message was intended for the press.
