Germany could secure a fifth Champions League spot in future seasons based on national team performance. The top four leagues in Europe receive four spots each under the current system, with England, Italy, Spain, and Germany occupying those positions. However, Germany could earn an additional spot by moving up in the UEFA coefficient rankings.
The ranking is determined by the overall performance of each national association’s teams in international competitions like the Champions League and Europa League. The points accumulated from qualification rounds, group stages, and knockout matches contribute to the overall score.
The two best-performing associations receive an extra Champions League spot in the following season, causing Europa League and Conference League positions to shift. Currently, Eintracht Frankfurt stands to benefit from this regulation in the Bundesliga.
To ensure fairness for smaller leagues, the average points per team play a crucial role. As of the 2025/26 season, Germany trails Spain but holds third place. England leads the rankings and is likely to secure the extra Champions League spot for the 2026/27 season.
In an update from UEFA, as of April 8, 2026, the association coefficient rankings show England, Spain, Germany, and Portugal in the top four positions. Spain remains within reach for Germany to overtake and secure an additional spot.
German teams face Spanish opponents in two pivotal quarterfinal matches. Bayern Munich plays Real Madrid in the Champions League, while Freiburg takes on Celta Vigo in the Europa League. The outcome of these matches could impact Germany’s chances of surpassing Spain in the rankings.
While Spain currently has an advantage with six teams competing in various tournaments, German hopes rest on Bayern, Freiburg, and Mainz. Mainz faces Strasbourg in the Conference League quarterfinals, alongside the other German teams in their respective competitions.
