In Ravenna, Italy, an exasperated mother has successfully evicted her son who refused to contribute to household expenses.
Do you know the Italian version of the name Tanguy? The story reported by Corriere della Sera strongly resembles the comedy by Etienne Chatilliez, released in 2001, depicting a 28-year-old model son who still lives with his parents, causing tensions as he refuses to leave their house.
In Italy, a mother, fed up with her son’s behavior, took legal action in 2024 to end an “intolerable” cohabitation that deteriorated over months. According to her statements, her 31-year-old son did not abide by household rules and did not contribute financially to any expenses, whether it be bills or common charges.
At the time of the legal proceedings, the son was employed as a waiter on a permanent contract. According to the court of Ravenna and as reported by our colleagues, he earned a net salary of around 1400 euros per month. “He doesn’t do chores, he has a job but he doesn’t pay the bills,” lamented his mother. In an attempt to counter the legal action, the man resigned from his job in the middle of the judicial process.
The resignation strategy did not convince the civil court. “He has reached an age (31) at which it must be presumed that he has achieved an independent life, with full work capacity,” as stated in the judgment shared by Italian colleagues. The judge ruled that the mother’s duty to provide maintenance had ceased despite his job loss, “without making concrete efforts to find another job”.
As a result, the court ordered the 31-year-old man to vacate the premises by June 30, 2026, as his mother could no longer be considered responsible for taking care of him. In addition to the eviction, he was also ordered to pay around 3,000 euros in legal fees. Now, this “Tanguy” has no choice but to find employment.
