An arcade at home
So here we are totally in line with what defines the DNA of the Milanese studio: racing. This reboot of a long-forgotten series, however, adds a very successful atmosphere, especially driven by magnificent cinematic scenes that add a storyline to the game. We follow multiple characters and groups in a rather dark story. The game draws much inspiration from gang wars between bikers, with the central theme being the revenge project of a group named Green Reapers after the murder of their former leader.
Without revolutionizing anything, Screamer’s story is a considerable asset and the quality of its cinematic scenes is not unrelated. They are accompanied by a very successful artistic direction that enhances the part that will interest us from now on: the race.
As heir to a long tradition of arcade games, Screamer is a fast-paced title where speed triumphs over realism. It offers a very accessible experience with dynamic and spectacular races, all set in diverse environments. Screamer always opts for efficiency with quick, almost instinctive handling and a driving focus on both drifting and brutal accelerations. In short, everyone can pick it up and have fun every time (or almost).
The tracks are designed to maintain constant tension with tight curves and long straight lines conducive to speed spikes. The game also introduces some subtleties, such as boost management or interactions between drivers, which add a bit of depth without burdening the experience. While simulation purists will inevitably be left wanting more, fans of immediate fun will certainly find plenty to enjoy.
A Burnout vibe
With a proposition that differs from what other games in the genre offer, Screamer emerges as a solid option in the landscape of arcade racing games. Without revolutionizing the genre, it captivates with the efficiency of its gameplay and a well-crafted staging, driven by quality cinematic scenes. A formula that, while not groundbreaking, remains sufficiently mastered to convince thrill-seekers and nostalgic fans of the legendary Burnout.
