The UNESCO Office in Mali took part in the World Water Day celebration on Sunday, March 22, 2026. The opening ceremony was presided over by Prime Minister General Abdoulaye Maïga, in the presence of the Minister of Energy and Water, Prof. Tiémoko Traoré, several government members, and the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Mali, representing the lead partner in the water and sanitation sector in Mali.

Under the national theme “Water, a source of equality”, this day featured panel discussions, an inter-university competition on the theme, and exhibition stands showcasing the expertise of water stakeholders.

This edition aligns with UNESCO’s vision, which promotes equitable and sustainable access to water resources for all. With over 50 years of expertise in water sciences, UNESCO supports its member states in understanding, sustainable management, and governance of water resources, contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6. This commitment is realized through two major programs: the Intergovernmental Hydrological Program (IHP) and the Global Water Resources Assessment Program.

UNESCO reaffirms its commitment to the Government of Mali, particularly the Ministry of Energy and Water, through the National Directorate of Hydraulics, to promote inclusive, sustainable, and equitable water resource management for socio-economic development and the well-being of the population.
