At Michel-Bousquiô College, the culture of cinema is well established. For years, the school has been participating in the College at the Cinema program.
Funded 55% by the Department, this initiative allows all middle school students to watch three films in theaters per year and receive training on visual education. On Monday, April 13, the 5th graders welcomed Ukrainian director Aliona Zagurovska, a graduate of the Fémis (National School of Image and Sound Professions) and author of fiction short films and documentaries selected in many festivals. An unique opportunity for students to explore the behind-the-scenes of the magic of cinema.
After discussing her work, Aliona Zagurovska guided the students in creating a story, developing a storyboard, and shooting scenes. This approach enabled students to understand the different aspects of filmmaking, from casting actors to sound recording, and selecting camera angles. The two-hour training session for each class was remarkably efficient. Who knows, it may inspire some students to pursue a career in filmmaking. One thing is certain: the students in Quillan actively participated in this initiation and many enjoyed it.
Perhaps in a few years, some students will choose to study cinematography, but that is another story.
