France lost their top spot in their World Cup 2027 qualification group after being defeated by the Netherlands on Tuesday in Breda. To regain their position, the French team will need to win against the same opponent on Saturday in Auxerre.

In order to secure a direct qualification to the Brazilian World Cup by finishing at the top of the group, the team led by Griedge Mbock will need to show a stronger performance at home in four days. The upcoming weekend’s match will be a crucial final between the top two teams in the group, with the Netherlands currently leading by one point.

French head coach Laurent Bonadei expressed frustration over conceding a goal and emphasized the need to reclaim the top spot in the group during the rematch in Auxerre. Despite the setback in the Netherlands, France still holds control of their destiny, but the warning received should not be taken lightly.

The French defense was criticized for its vulnerability, especially as they had conceded at least one goal in the eleven matches leading up to Tuesday’s game. The match itself saw France trailing early after a well-executed free-kick resulted in a goal for the Netherlands.

Coach Laurent Bonadei’s wish for a strong defensive display was not realized, with goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin facing criticism for not preventing the second goal. While France managed to equalize briefly with a goal from Sandy Baltimore, their offensive display was also lacking, with only three shots on target out of seven attempts.

The coach will need to address both defensive and offensive issues moving forward, as the competition intensifies in the quest for World Cup qualification.
