200 W on desktop, and EK immediately joins the thermal discussion. The key is more stable boosts if you leave the air for a custom loop.

EK puts pressure on Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 cooling

The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 aligns 16 cores, 32 threads under Zen 5 on AM5, with an announced boost of up to 5.6 GHz and a TDP of 200 W, a first for AMD on desktop. Major feature: a double 3D V-Cache present on the two CCDs, on the difference from previous X3Ds which only stacked the cache on a single chiplet.

EK claims that liquid cooling would avoid “leaving performance on the table”, maintaining lower temperatures to support more consistent boost behavior under load. The message also serves as a showcase for its AM5 range, while the thermal window narrows on this 200 W TDP.

Prices for AM5 water blocks and market context

On AM5, the entry-level EK starts with the EK-Quantum Velocity³ at €112. Older EK-Quantum Velocity² AM5s cost between €138 and €147 depending on the finish. The Magnitude AM5 series remains significantly above, from around €213 to €329, which is much more than a classic high-performance cooler.

EK’s strategy, however, comes up against confidence damaged by two years of reports of unpaid debts, management problems and restructuring. Even with performances at the level, convincing enthusiasts to put more than €100 into the brand will be more difficult.

CPU availability and pricing

AMD has not yet communicated the price of the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2. It should logically be at least at the level of the 9950X3D (single die 3D V-Cache) launched at $699 (around €650 as an indication). The release is scheduled for April 22, with pricing expected shortly before.

If the promise of sustained frequencies depends heavily on the thermal ceiling, a 200 W on AM5 reinforces the interest of an efficient loop for those who want to lock in high boosts over long loads. It remains for the market to judge whether the cost difference compared to high-end aircooling is justified, especially in view of the image of EK currently under surveillance.
