On desktop, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 reaches 200W, and EK is bringing thermal discussion to the table. The result: more stable boosts when moving from air to a custom loop.

EK puts pressure on cooling for Ryzen 9 9950X3D2

The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 features 16 cores, 32 threads on Zen 5 on AM5, with a boost up to 5.6 GHz and a 200W TDP, a first for AMD on desktop. A major feature: a double 3D V-Cache present on both CCDs, unlike previous X3D models that only stacked cache on one chiplet.

EK claims that liquid cooling would help avoid “leaving performance on the table,” by maintaining lower temperatures to support a more consistent boost behavior under load. The message also serves as a showcase for its AM5 range, as the thermal window tightens around this 200W TDP.

Prices of AM5 waterblocks and market context

On AM5, EK’s entry-level starts with the EK-Quantum Velocity³ at €112. Older EK-Quantum Velocity² AM5 models range from €138 to €147 depending on the finish. The Magnitude AM5 series remains significantly higher, from around €213 to €329, much more than a traditional high-performance air cooler.

However, EK’s strategy faces a trust damaged by two years of reports on unpaid bills, management issues, and restructuring. Even with competitive performance, convincing enthusiasts to invest over €100 in the brand will be more challenging.

Availability and pricing positioning of the CPU

AMD has not yet revealed the price of the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2. It should logically be at least on par with the 9950X3D (single die 3D V-Cache) launched at $699 (approximately €650 as an indicative price). The release is scheduled for April 22, with pricing expected shortly before.

If sustained frequency promise strongly depends on the thermal ceiling, a 200W on AM5 reinforces the need for an effective loop for those aiming to lock in high boosts during long loads. The market will judge whether the cost difference compared to high-end aircooling is justified, especially given EK’s current surveillance status.
