No more waiting in front of a progress bar after each driver update? Nvidia launches a tool to compile your shaders in the background. But the real solution is still far away.
Every PC gamer has experienced this annoying sight at least once. You launch a game, and instead of diving into the action, a progress bar appears: “Compiling shaders.” The operation can last several minutesdepending on the title and configuration. NVIDIA has just rolled out a tool that promises to reduce this frustration.
Auto Shader Compilation does the dirty work while you sleep
The function is called Auto Shader Compilationor ASC for those in a hurry. It is included in beta in the latest update of the NVIDIA app, released on March 31, 2026. The principle: when your PC is inactive, the application automatically recompiles les shaders DirectX 12 of your installed games. On the next launch, the loading bar disappears.

To benefit from it, you need the minimum GeForce Game Ready 595.97 WHQL driver. The option is disabled by default. It can be found in the app’s global settings, under “Shader Cache“. The user can adjust the disk space reserved and the level of resources allocated to compilation. A button “Compile Now» also allows you to force the operation on demand.
The problem, and it’s a big one: ASC only worksafter a driver update. If you are installing a game for the first time, the initial compilation is unavoidable. The promise is therefore limited to removing recurring recompilations, not the waiting screen on first launch.
Intel is working on a similar project. The manufacturer has already deployed its own system, called Precompiled Shader Distributionwhich supports around ten games. The approach is comparable: provide precompiled shaders to avoid the processor having to recalculate everything locally.
The real solution is called Advanced Shader Delivery
Nvidia makes no secret of it. The ASC is presented as a “first step”. The final destination isAdvanced Shader Deliverya program led by Microsoft to better impose Windows on the segment of portable PC consoles its ROG Xbox Ally while preparing the ground for the Xbox “Helix”. The principle is more ambitious: distribute shaders already compiled for each hardware configuration via download platforms. All directly when installing the game.
All three GPU manufacturers are aligned. Nvidia promises ASD integration for GeForce RTX by the end of the year. Intel has confirmed support on its Lunar Lake and Panther Lake chips. AMD is collaborating with Microsoft on the entire program since the red team is equipping the manufacturer both on the Xbox Ally part and on the firm’s next home console. On the game engine side, Epic Games has announced that it is working on integration into Unreal Engine. On paper, ASD could make local compilation almost obsolete, even on first launch.
In the meantime, Nvidia’s ASC remains a palliative. Useful, but limited to players who regularly update their drivers and who, in fact, undergo the systematic recompilation that goes with it. Not exactly the promised revolution, more a well-placed bandage while waiting for the real cure.
