Is AMD hiding the truth from us? The FSR 4 already works on old graphics cards thanks to the PS5 Pro

AMD’s FSR 4 technology could easily run on older Radeon graphics cards, as confirmed by Mark Cerny, the architect of the PS5. The PS5 Pro, based on the aging RDNA 2 architecture, now features an improved supersampling technology, PSSR 2, which is derived from a recent version of FSR. In an interview with Digital Foundry, Cerny mentioned that PSSR 2 utilizes an implementation of FSR 4 that AMD has not opened up to its older RDNA 3 and RDNA 2 graphics cards.

Cerny explained that the FSR Redstone and the new PSSR have slightly different implementations due to underlying hardware differences but yield similar results. While FSR targets PC gamers, PSSR is tailored for console players who sit farther away from their screens.

It has long been known that AMD could bring FSR 4 to older Radeon graphics cards under RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 architecture. The exclusivity of FSR 4 to newer Radeon RX 9000 cards with RDNA 4 architecture raises questions about AMD’s strategic decisions in this regard.

While AMD’s intentions remain unclear, recent statements suggest a potential beta version of FSR 4 for previous GPU generations could be on the horizon. The situation is worth monitoring.
