AMD announces the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, its processor with a large 208 MB cache

AMD introduces the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, the first processor from the brand to feature 3D V-Cache on both chiplets simultaneously. This results in a total of 208 MB of cache, an absolute record for a Ryzen processor and a positioning that AMD explicitly places between its consumer-grade chips and professional Threadripper processors.

The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is official The processor is based on the Zen 5 architecture with the AM5 socket, 16 cores, 32 threads, a base frequency of 4.3 GHz, and a boost up to 5.6 GHz. Compared to the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, the increase in cache comes with two trade-offs: 100 MHz less maximum frequency and a 30 W increase in thermal design power (TDP) to reach 200 W.

AMD shifts away from the purely gaming image associated with X3D processors. For professional workloads, the company claims up to a 10% improvement over the Ryzen 9 9950X3D in rendering, content creation, artificial intelligence, and compilation. Detailed benchmarks show gains of up to 7% in V-Ray and Blender, 5-7% in content creation tools, 13% in science data tests SPEC Workstation, 5% in Chromium compilation, and 8% in the Unreal Engine. The idea is clear: doubling the cache area directly benefits workflows with data sets that exceed the capacity of a single chiplet’s cache.

For gaming performance, however, AMD is not releasing any figures at the moment, which is unusual for an X3D chip where this is typically the main selling point.

The price of the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 remains unknown for now. The launch date is set for April 22, and AMD hints that the price tag will be high.
