News 4 in 4: Lawmakers consider big changes for GA schools + Raising Cane’s could be coming to Greenville

Georgia lawmakers are considering some major changes in high schools after *** deadly shooting killed 4 people. *** bill in the state legislature would require weapons detection systems, and Georgia could become the first state to require every student to be checked for weapons when arriving at public school each day. Now questions are being asked about who will pay the $10,000 or more per system. There’s also the issue of staffing checkpoints. Now the bill is awaiting final votes in the House and Senate before heading to Governor Brian Kemp’s desk. If Governor Kemp elects to sign it, the bill wouldn’t go into effect until the 2027-20208 school year. Georgia lawmakers have also passed *** bill that bans the use of cell phones during the school day. Now some students say they need their phones just in case there’s another emergency like *** shooting. Well, some lawmakers believe it’s safer during emergencies for students to be paying full attention to teachers and staff. Welcome back to WIFF News 4 in 4. I’m your host, Isabel Mark, and turning to our weather for this weekend, meteorologist Bradford Ambrose has your weekend forecast. Looking ahead into the weekend forecast, major changes on the way as *** cooldown happens, tracking that front later on tonight that will usher in *** much colder air mass for the weekend, near record or record breaking heat on Friday. High temperatures will struggle to get out of the 50s and 60s both Saturday and Sunday. We do have *** high fire danger in, in effect for Saturday with that low relative humidity. Also those gusty winds. And obviously the ongoing significant drought across the area, breezy conditions, if not windy conditions, especially in the Western North Carolina live Super Doppler for impact day for Sunday morning, patchy frost likely across the upstate in northeast Georgia, light freeze for the mountains, and we are tracking another warm-up heading into next week. Highs returning into the 70s and 80s. Taxpayers in South Carolina are getting ***. *** little bit more time to file this season. The Department of Revenue says the due date for all individual state income tax returns is now October 15th. The DOR says the extension only applies to the deadline to file your return, not to pay what you owe. Now they say you’ll owe penalties if you do not pay at least 90% of your 2025 tax liability by April 15th. And *** Raising Canes could keyword could be coming to Greenville. According to *** City of Greenville Board of Zoning Appeals agenda. Raising Canes is looking at *** location on Woodruff Road for the restaurant right near Whole Foods. It’s set to be discussed at an April meeting. The only other location in the upstate is on Clemson University’s campus, and we’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
