For its nineteenth anniversary, PUBG unveils an ambitious roadmap for 2026. Including destructible environments, new game modes, and a total overhaul of its arsenal, the battle royale pioneer prepares for a true revolution, even if it means delaying its graphical transition.
The battle royale genre pioneer, PUBG, celebrates its ninth anniversary and continues to attract over a million concurrent players. The 2026 roadmap promises to shake up players’ habits with unprecedented mechanics and surprising game modes. The only downside is that the highly anticipated transition to the Unreal Engine 5 will take longer than expected.
Strategic delay for the new graphics engine The announcement caused a stir last year, but players will need to be patient. Krafton confirmed that the switch to Unreal Engine 5 will not be a simple port. The teams prefer to revise their initial plans to aim for a complete overhaul during the tenth anniversary in 2027.
To compensate for this wait, the studio is deploying a range of new features to deepen the tactical dimension of the game in the coming months.
Destruction, executions, and interactive smoke The iconic map Erangel will undergo an explosive makeover in April with the introduction of destructible terrain. Players will be able to dig their own shelters in the open field, radically changing end-game confrontations. Miramar, on the other hand, will feature secret rooms to reward exploration and risk-taking.
Another major addition is the interactive smoke, where smoke grenades will react to wind and explosions, offering new strategic opportunities. Close combat also becomes more brutal with the introduction of executions. It will now be possible to finish off a grounded enemy with a melee weapon through a spectacular and rewarding animation.
A total arsenal overhaul Gone are the days of certain weapons reigning supreme for years. Krafton introduces meta rotations every four months. The objective is to force players to adapt their playstyle each season. New accessories, like the hybrid scope, will be introduced, while underused weapons will be permanently removed to maintain a perfect balance.
PUBG aims to diversify its offering with bold game modes. The Xeno Point mode will offer a cooperative roguelite experience where players face waves of enemies and colossal bosses. Even more surprising, Krafton has partnered with Starbreeze to create PAYDAY, a heist mode requiring stealth and meticulous coordination inspired by the license.
Finally, aspiring creators are not forgotten. User-generated content will benefit from new, more powerful tools, allowing the community to easily design and share their own game modes. With this particularly dense roadmap, PUBG proves that it intends to remain a significant player in the genre, attempting to renew its experience.
