Testimony: “A huge relief, as if a weight has been lifted off.”

At the Department of Urology, Andrology, and Sexual Medicine at the University Medical Center of the National University of Vietnam in Hanoi, a major breakthrough in the treatment of complex kidney stones has been achieved thanks to the successful implementation by doctors of a flexible endoscopy combined with a modern laser system.

Instead of traditional surgical methods with invasive risks and scarring, this new technique allows access to the stones through the natural urinary pathways, without skin incision, thus allowing patients to get rid of stones in multiple locations after a single procedure.

Mrs. D.TH (47 years old, Hanoi), one of the patients who benefited from this new technique, could not hide her surprise after the intervention.

“In the beginning, I was very worried because the stones were in several places, and I thought I would have to undergo a major surgical procedure. But after learning that it was a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure, I was reassured. I hardly felt any pain after the operation, and I was able to walk normally just 24 hours later. I was preparing to leave the hospital,” Mrs. H. confided.

This case clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of the new treatment method, which not only completely resolves the problem but also offers the patient a gentle and less painful treatment experience.

When technology replaces surgical procedures.

According to Dr. Vu Ngoc Thang, head of the Department of Urology, Andrology, and Sexual Medicine, retrograde endoscopic surgery using a flexible endoscope (FURS) is a modern technique that requires a high level of expertise and advanced equipment.

Unlike percutaneous nephrolithotomy (NLPC), which requires the insertion of a needle through the back into the kidney, or retroperitoneal endoscopic techniques, flexible endoscopy uses equipment that can bend up to 270 degrees, allowing doctors to access most areas of the renal pelvis and calices.

“We can access every corner of the kidney without making an incision on the patient’s body. This is the optimal solution to preserve almost all of the renal tissue and its function,” Dr. Vu Ngoc Thang stated.

One of the key factors in the success of this method is the Dornier Thulio laser system – an advanced device that integrates Thulium and Holmium technologies.

Thanks to its high power and great flexibility in adjustment, this system offers numerous exceptional advantages such as ultra-fine lithotripsy, which easily fragments large stones into small pieces or fine dust in a reduced time frame; a “2-in-1” efficiency, capable of treating ureteral and renal stones simultaneously in a single procedure; precise energy control, minimizing mucosal lesions, thereby reducing the risk of bleeding and postoperative complications.

As a result, patients no longer need to undergo multiple surgical interventions as before, significantly shortening the duration of treatment and recovery.

According to Dr. Vu Ngoc Thang, the combination of flexible endoscopy and high-tech laser is gradually becoming the “standard” in the treatment of urinary stones due to its exceptional advantages:

– No incision: Patients have absolutely no scars, preserving their body structure. – Minimally painful: As there are no skin incisions or trauma to the renal parenchyma, patients can eat, drink, and move within a few hours. – Early discharge: Instead of having to stay hospitalized for a whole week as with older methods, patients can leave within 24 hours, optimizing costs and time.

“Mastery of advanced technologies is not just about curing diseases but primarily about offering patients the gentlest and most humane care journey possible,” affirmed Dr. Vu Ngoc Thang.

The combination of exceptional expertise and advanced technology continues to give rise to touching stories, bringing joy and well-being to the community.
