The Hamburg Towers defeated Bayern Munich in front of a record crowd of 12,570 spectators in a sold-out arena in Volkspark, showcasing their best performance of the season in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) on Sunday. The Northerners deservedly beat the reigning champions with a score of 96-81 (24-22, 24-20, 21-17, 27-22).

It was a dominant display by the hosts, likely securing a crucial step towards avoiding relegation. The Towers have now climbed to 15th place in the standings, overtaking Mitteldeutscher BC (16th), who defeated Rasta Vechta on Saturday, putting Heidelberg (17th) and Braunschweig (18th) under more pressure.

The victory was largely due to an outstanding performance highlighted by three-point shooting, securing another triumph over the league leaders in the grand Volkspark arena. Last year, the Hamburg team defeated Munich 74-70.

Leonard “LJ” Thorpe with 24 points and Kenneth Ogbe with 21 points were standout performers contributing significantly to the victory. The Hanseatic team earned the win with high energy, solid defense, and effective ball movement throughout the game.

Ogbe was instrumental in giving the Towers a lead at halftime, showcasing his skills with an impressive play, which set the tone for the match. The Towers maintained their momentum and secured a halftime lead to pressure the defending champions further.

The trend of impressive three-point shooting continued in the second half, with the Towers extending their lead through effective perimeter shooting. Despite a brief resurgence from Munich, the Towers, led by Thorpe, managed to maintain their advantage going into the final quarter.

The cheers from the 12,500 fans were premature as the Towers continued to dominate, with Ogbe extending their lead and sealing a comfortable victory with a final score of 96-81.
