V-neck, wide sleeves, striped pattern. In the distance, one could catch a glimpse of the iconic tunic of the great Johan Cruyff from the 70s, but upon closer inspection, you can see the inscription “Popo Club,” accompanied by its faithful mascot “Mr Popo.” And even though this may bring a smile, the cause remains important.
Detectable and curable, colorectal cancer is cured in 9 out of 10 cases
The ACR Foundation, recognized as a public utility, 100% dedicated to cancer research and already the author of 332 research projects full of hope for patients, is launching the “Popo Club” and its jerseys resembling a real supporters club, to convey a simple but crucial message: detectable and curable, colorectal cancer is cured in 9 out of 10 cases.
However, less than a third of the French population is currently being screened. “With ‘Mr Popo,’ we are using the codes of supporters to transform an intimate subject into a collective moment. The goal is simple: to make people understand that a gesture done in a few minutes can help detect the disease early and save thousands of lives,” said François Dupré, director general of the Foundation.
“Young people in their fifties, the main target of this campaign”
“We are fortunate in France to have a free public screening policy, but only 28% of our citizens use it for colorectal cancer screening in the age groups concerned,” laments Éric Solary, the vice-president, “especially the young fifty-year-olds, the main target of this campaign.”
So, when you see this jersey on the street, near a stadium, or in a bar, think about yourself or a loved one. Screening relies on a simple, free test that can be done at home in a few minutes. 6600 lives could be saved if the national participation target of 65% is achieved.
