Too much time wasted: Donald Trump cancels American envoys trip to Pakistan for peace talks with Iran

“If they want to discuss, they just have to call us,” justified the American president. The Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, meanwhile, met with Pakistani leaders on Saturday.

American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were originally expected in Islamabad (Pakistan) on Saturday, April 25. But they will not come: Donald Trump announced to Fox News and CNN that he had canceled this trip.

Seemingly impatient and reluctant to send his teams on a “15, 16-hour” journey, he stated that discussions could very well be held over the phone. “Too much time wasted traveling, too much work! (…) Nobody knows who is in charge, including themselves,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform. “If they want to discuss, they just have to call us.”

Speaking a little later on the tarmac of Palm Beach airport in Florida, the American president mentioned a meeting with the Iranians scheduled for “Tuesday” in Islamabad. “When they mentioned the meeting scheduled for Tuesday, I said: ‘Tuesday is a long time away, but ultimately, it’s a long way’,” he told journalists before departing for Washington, where he will attend the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in the evening.

Asked about what made him change his mind, he replied: “Nothing. It’s just that they presented us with a document that should have been better. And, strangely enough, as soon as I canceled, within ten minutes, they submitted a much better new document.” And he added: “We have all the cards in hand.”
