Lyon takes the lead in the race for third place. Lyon had a successful weekend by winning against Rennes in the 32nd round of Ligue 1.
Trailing after a goal from Al Tamari, Paulo Fonseca’s team managed to turn the game around with goals from Yaremchuk, Tolisso, Moreira, and Endrick. Lyon now sits in third place with a two-point lead over Lille.
Tolisso revitalizes Lyon
The Bretons had been unbeaten for five matches (4 wins, 1 draw). Regardless of the outcome in the last two matches, Lyon, who still has to play away at Toulouse and host Lens, is almost certain to secure a spot in Europe next season. Sixth-place Monaco is six points behind with a significantly worse goal difference (+18 versus +8).
Lyon’s stated goal at the beginning of the season was to qualify for a European competition after facing relegation to Ligue 2 for financial reasons before being reinstated on appeal. The match started poorly for Lyon with Rennes opening the scoring through a stunning volley by Jordanian Al-Tamari.
However, Lyon quickly turned the situation around in just four minutes. Ukrainian Yaremchuk equalized with a header, Tolisso scored from a penalty, and Samba limited the damage for Rennes. Despite Lepaul’s equalizer, Lyon managed to secure the win with goals from Moreira and Endrick.
Samba limited the damage: Lyon began the second half poorly once again, allowing Lepaul to equalize. However, Lyon regained control and Moreira and Endrick extended their lead. Despite a chance for Rennes in the first half, Lyon’s lead was too much for them to overcome.
