It was an unexpected comeback. But nostalgia did not tip the balance for the jury and the audience. Boy George, an icon of the 80s with his group Culture Club, took part in the performance of the candidate from San Marino at Eurovision 2026 during the first semi-final on Tuesday 12th May.
The singer Senhit represented her small, landlocked country in Italy with the dancing song “Superstar”. In a disco dress and sequin coat, she looked like she had just stepped out of a nightclub from the era. Two-thirds into the song, Boy George appeared on a silver stage, wearing a faceted hat on his head.
Despite this surprise feature and a stage setup with lasers and flamethrowers, the San Marino candidate was not selected to proceed in the competition.
The Finnish, Greek, and Israeli favorites qualified without surprises. Belgium, Sweden, Moldova, Serbia, Croatia, Lithuania, and Poland also secured their tickets to the final on Saturday 16th May, unlike Estonia, Georgia, Montenegro, and Portugal.
