As we head into Act III of Season 2026Max, the lead of the systems and core game mechanics teams, alongside the modes and balance designers, has provided a comprehensive look at the state of the game. This update covers everything from the nuances of the MMR system to experimental game modes and much-needed balance shifts for Neon and shotguns.

Reforming the Competitive Experience

The core philosophy remains simple: your rank should accurately reflect your skill, and the journey should feel fair. Riot is becoming more proactive in testing matchmaking refinements to deliver on this promise.

MMR and RR Adjustments

  • Individual Impact: Updates made in January to the MMR system now better account for individual performance during matches, leading to less one-sided games and more even contributions across players.
  • Rank Consistency: To address feedback regarding visible rank differences and the feeling that RR losses outweigh gains, the system now rewards strong performances more heavily while increasing the cost of weaker ones.
  • Continuous Iteration: Matchmaking and ranked integrity are primary focuses for the year, with more iterations planned to ensure consistency.

Immortal and Radiant Integrity

  • Performance Over Grind: Riot is pushing for the Radiant ladder to be a pinnacle of performance rather than just a measure of time spent.
  • Security Measures: Increased investment in anti-cheat and win-trading detection is underway to ensure high-rank legitimacy. Several egregious win-traders have already been banned this year.
  • Specialized Rewards: Beyond systemic fixes, the team is developing specialized rewards for those who reach the very top of the ladder.

The Future of Ranked Rewards

There is a significant shift coming to how players are recognized for their yearly achievements.

Reward Period Primary Reward Type Distribution Note
Season 2026 (Act III & VI) Ranked Gun Buddy The final time Gun Buddies are the primary reward.
Season 2027 Evolving Item An item that evolves throughout your ranked journey.

The new 2027 rewards will be distributed on Day 1 of Season 2027. While Riot intended to ship these earlier, they are taking extra time to ensure the quality is right, with more details expected in September.

New Game Modes and “Replication†Returns

Armand, the modes designer, highlighted the team’s commitment to experimenting with Limited Time Modes (LTMs).

  • Skirmish & Customs: Due to overwhelming player demand, Skirmish has returned to the queue, now featuring an experimental ranked ladder.
  • The Replication Blend: A new mode is in development that blends Replication with All Random One Site. This mode aims for high-frequency “off-the-wall†moments by giving different agents to every player on a single site each round.
  • New Spike Mode: Arriving in Act IVthis mode will feature shortened rounds and smaller teams to put player skills to the test.
  • Act V Surprise: A “combat simulation gone haywire†involving K.O. is teased for the end of the year, described as being fundamentally different from anything Riot has done before.

Live Balance: Initiators, Neon, and Shotguns

Balance leads Dan and Tiffy provided an update on the philosophical shifts driving current changes.

Tactical Cooldowns and Weapon Buffs

  • Initiator Signature Abilities: In Patch 13.0signature cooldowns for Initiators will be reduced from 60s to 50s. This aims to provide more room for round-over-round strategic adaptation while keeping late-round fights clean.
  • The Bandit: This weapon is receiving buffs in Patch 13.0 to make it a more viable mid-round option, similar to the position the Sheriff holds.

Neon and Shotgun Hotfixes

While originally scheduled for a month out, several changes are being pushed today to address immediate community frustration:

  • Neon Evasiveness: Neon’s mobility and speed during bunny hopping are being tuned down to add more counterplay for opponents. Her “invasiveness†was deemed too extreme for the current combat space.
  • Shotgun Nerves: Changes are targeting shotgun effectiveness while moving and jumping, forcing players to play more defensively or “hunker down†to secure kills.

Sentinel Updates

Sentinels are intended to be a reliable answer to fast, explosive team compositions.

  • Veto Buffs: In Patch 13.0Veto will receive updates to his rotational power and his ability to disrupt site hits using Interceptor.

Social Replays Arrive

In a much-anticipated update, Riot is enabling social replay sharing. Starting in Patch 12.10players can view a friend’s match history and find a button to download and view their replays directly. This feature is designed to facilitate VOD reviews and sharing highlights with friends.
