Münster’s relegation from the 2nd division – as expected
In a clear 0-3 defeat in Elversberg, the bottom team presented itself like a relegation candidate. Absolutely helpless. While the hosts fulfilled their big dream of direct promotion to the Bundesliga with a concentrated performance.
No party crashers. Preußen’s “leftovers ramp” cannot stop Elversberg!
Coach Alois Schwartz (59), who remained winless (3 losses/4 draws) in his seventh and final game with the “Eagles,” didn’t want to talk much after the final whistle: “We tried everything to make ourselves as expensive as possible. It worked for the first ten minutes. But then Elversberg’s dominance became too big. A deserved defeat that we would have liked to avoid.”
But they couldn’t. Especially since the “Eagles” had to do without 12 professionals due to injuries or suspensions. Schwartz was forced to improvise, including putting Marco Meyerhöfer (30) as a defensive midfielder for the first time ever. Nice try, but in the end, it was just not enough, as the black-white-green “leftovers ramp” brought too little to the pitch in front of 1500 traveling fans.
With Elversberg celebrating the Saarland football miracle, the guests headed to the team bus with hanging heads. Knowing that they had a disappointing season. After just two years in the lower league, they rightfully have to take the bitter path to the third division. Only six wins, 12 draws, but 16 times completely without points – the last place is well deserved.
Even sports director Ole Kittner (38) had to admit: “The numbers speak for themselves. Nevertheless, we had chances throughout this season to turn the tide. Unfortunately, we didn’t succeed.”
Now a fresh start in the 3rd league. The team is completely unclear. Talks and negotiations with existing players and new signings are in full swing. It is only certain that Thomas Wörle (44) will be on the sidelines as head coach. The former Ulm coach is expected to be officially introduced on Tuesday.
Joshua Mees (30), Preußen’s forward, a native of Saarland, watched the celebrations of Elversberg with mixed emotions. He is leaving for Costa Rica on Tuesday to switch off, not think about football, and recharge his batteries for the upcoming season with positive energy starting at the end of June.
Before that, an official farewell brunch will take place at the LVM-Preußenstadion on Monday morning. Where everyone – players, coaching staff, and staff – will come together one last time. At Schwartz’s explicit request. The 55-day coach will remember his time in Münster fondly, despite the undesirable sporting results.
Interesting: His predecessor and ex-coach Alexander Ende (46), who was fired in mid-March due to lack of success, must now also go down to the 3rd league with his new club Fortuna Düsseldorf. As a “double relegation coach,” he will thus go down in football history…
