Candidates qualify for special congressional primaries under new map

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Several Republican and Democratic candidates have signed up to run in special primary elections for new congressional districts as planned in a recent special session of the Alabama Legislature.

The special elections are set for August 11 in Alabama congressional districts 1, 2, 4 and 6. Those were the only districts impacted by the change in map.

In the 1st District, former Congressman Jerry Carl has qualified as have three Republican challengers in Lucas Burger, John Mills and Austin Sidwell. On the Democratic side, Clyde Jones is the only candidate to qualify and will presumably that party’s nominee in November.

2nd District Congressman Shomari Figures has qualified to run in the special, even though the district no longer includes Mobile. Five Republicans have signed up to run, including State Rep. Rhett Marques, Hampton Harris, Christian Horn, David Matthews, Joshua McKee and James Richardson.

In the 6th district, Congressman Gary Palmer will again be challenged by Case Dixon in the Republican Primary. On the Democratic side, four candidates have qualified: Jacob Bouma-Sims, Ashtyn Kennedy, Maurice Mercer and Keith Pilkington.

In the 7th district, Congresswoman Terri Sewell was the lone Democrat to qualify. Two Republicans have signed up to run in AL-7: Ammie Akin and David W. Perry.
