Spanish Cooperation in Action: Transformative Alliances for Women’s Rights

“Spanish Cooperation in Action: Transformative Alliances for the Promotion of Rural Palestinian and Jordanian Women with Disabilities” was the title of the international congress organized by the Foundation for Social Promotion. The event brought together representatives from various organizations and entities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union, and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECID).

Participants acknowledged the ongoing war in the Middle East and highlighted the crucial role of international cooperation as a beacon of hope for peace. The congress emphasized the role of civil society in promoting gender equality as a human right in Palestine and Jordan.

Suzan Sahori, director of Bethlehem Fair Trade Artisans, described how her organization supports Palestinian female artisans and preserves their rich heritage. She highlighted the silent strength of Palestinian women, particularly in rural areas where they uphold traditions amidst greater challenges in accessing economic opportunities.

Anni Medzhagopian, director of the Jordanian organization Al Hussein Society, addressed the discrimination faced by women with disabilities in Jordan, emphasizing the intersectional challenges they encounter in education, employment, and decision-making.

Miriam Ciscar from AECID presented the organization’s strategy that aims to address structural gender inequalities by transforming power structures and ensuring equitable redistribution of resources and opportunities.

Raül Compés, director of CIHEAM, warned about the multiple crises threatening Mediterranean countries and stressed the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation mechanisms for stability and prosperity.

During discussions, a striking figure was mentioned, highlighting that global funds allocated to international cooperation amount to the cost of a single F16 aircraft. This comparison was first presented by former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.
