Two U.S. ships have passed through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Pentagon, a claim disputed by Iran. The United States aims to secure the area and prepare for demining. These tensions come amid negotiations between the two countries.

Two U.S. Navy ships crossed the Strait of Hormuz today, as reported by Axios and later confirmed by the Pentagon. A senior Iranian military official, quoted by state television, denied this information. The U.S. Navy has begun to “set the conditions” for demining, as reported by Le Parisien. However, Iran’s Fars news agency stated that the U.S. has made excessive demands regarding the strait and other matters.

This American operation aims to boost confidence for commercial ships to navigate the strait, as Axios reported. The ships were part of a broader mission to ensure the strait is completely cleared of marine mines previously laid by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, explained Centcom in a statement.

Negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, facilitated by Pakistan, are ongoing in Islamabad to transform the ceasefire into a lasting peace. President Donald Trump indicated on his social network Truth Social that the U.S. had started the process of securing the Strait of Hormuz after over a month of standstill. Trump criticized countries that, in his opinion, have not done enough to secure the area, where one-fifth of the world’s oil typically transits.

“We are now beginning the process to secure the Strait of Hormuz for the benefit of all countries around the world, including China, Japan, South Korea, France, Germany, and many others,” wrote Donald Trump on Truth Social. “Incredible fact: they don’t have the courage or willingness to do the job themselves,” he added. “Meanwhile, tankers from around the world are heading to the United States to load oil,” Trump celebrated.
