The catastrophic results of OGC Nice, struggling to stay in Ligue 1, have had a psychological impact on the players, leading to an increasingly fractured dressing room.

On the brink of suffocation in the championship, OGC Nice seems to be running out of air. Ranked 15th in Ligue 1, the team is fighting for survival, with only a 5-point lead over 16th-placed Auxerre, just six rounds before the end of the season. But tensions are running high on the French Riviera.

Defeated by Strasbourg (1-3) last week in the 28th round of Ligue 1, OGC Nice have only won one of their last nine league matches. Beyond this alarming streak, it is the players’ attitudes that are causing concern among supporters, as the crisis in Nice continues to grow.

Players are questioning Claude Puel’s choices

Following the defeat to Strasbourg, as reported by the newspaper Nice-Matin, the halftime score of 3-0 led Claude Puel to make three substitutions at the end of the first 45 minutes, replacing Sofiane Diop, Isak Jansson and Juma Bah. This decision was not well received by the players, with Diop and Jansson even refusing to return to the bench for the second half.

“There were signs of annoyance, yes. I have to be careful about anything that could challenge collective unity. I have to be very vigilant. We all need to be focused on the goal. We must not get upset. It’s internal matters, but I’m very vigilant about it. There are disciplinary measures in place and they will be enforced,” explained the 64-year-old coach in a press conference on Friday. Both players received fines and will not start the upcoming match against Le Havre on Sunday afternoon (5:15 pm).

Tensions, insults, interview refusals… The fracture grows closer

Another incident occurred after the defeat to Strasbourg, with Sofiane Diop showing discontent towards teammate Jonathan Clauss. Clauss, who was supposed to speak to the media, decided not to give an interview, despite it being planned with the broadcaster Ligue 1+.

During the same match, an altercation took place between Hicham Boudaoui and Elye Wahi. Boudaoui reportedly insulted the 23-year-old forward throughout the match. These successive serious incidents highlight an extremely tense atmosphere in Nice, far from the calmness necessary for the club’s survival.

A poor result against Le Havre would undoubtedly increase tensions among the players as the dressing room edges closer to complete breakdown. Ligue 2 is looming, and waves of uncertainty flood Nice. Claude Puel must navigate an extremely fragile ship, teetering on the edge of sinking.
