Bollywood singer Asha Bhosle dies at the age of 92

Asha Bhosle, one of the most iconic voices in Indian cinema music, has passed away in Bombay at the age of 92, her family announced. “My mother passed away today (Sunday). Her funeral will take place tomorrow at Bombay’s Shivaji Park,” said her son Anand Bhosle to the press.

Asha Bhosle’s voice is emblematic of Bollywood music from the 1970s and 1980s. Over her seven-decade-long career, she recorded over 12,000 songs in multiple languages of the country.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sadness at her passing. “Her extraordinary musical journey, spanning decades, has enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts around the world,” he wrote on the social network X. “She will continue to inspire generations, and her songs will resonate forever in people’s lives.”

Born on September 8, 1933, into a family of musicians, Asha Bhosle began singing as a child alongside her older sister, another renowned Indian singer, Lata Mangeshkar – known as the “Nightingale of India” and who passed away in 2022.

Asha Bhosle embraced genres as diverse as pop and folk, establishing herself as one of the most versatile interpreters of Indian film songs.

She collaborated with the British band Gorillaz for her latest album, “The Mountain” (“Parvat”), released in February.

Passionate about gastronomy, she also launched her chain of restaurants, Asha’s, with establishments in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, as well as in the United Kingdom.
