Jannik Sinner regains the top spot in the ATP ranking. On Sunday, April 12, the Italian tennis player defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000, winning in two sets 7-6 (5), 6-3 and claiming his third consecutive tournament victory after Indian Wells and Miami, which allowed him to achieve the historic Sunshine Double.

This triumph against his Spanish rival had a different taste, as it marks Sinner’s return to the top of the ATP ranking after 66 weeks. Alcaraz entered the tournament with the 1,000 points he earned from his victory the previous year, while the Italian was suspended in the Clostebol case.

After the Sunshine Double, Sinner had already been getting closer to Alcaraz’s record. With his victory in Miami, following Indian Wells, the Italian tennis player reached 12,400 points, 1,190 less than Alcaraz, who was eliminated in the third round by Korda.

Sinner then sealed his quest for the world number one spot with his triumph in Monte-Carlo. By winning the final in the Principality, despite Alcaraz losing in the final, the Italian rose to the top of the ATP ranking. The Tyrolean South now has a total of 13,400 points, while Alcaraz follows closely with 13,240. The Murcian could quickly regain the lead in the ranking by winning the ATP Barcelona tournament, which starts tomorrow. Alcaraz is the top seed on the Catalan clay court.
