The High Court of Justice has ordered the Israeli army to launch a pilot program on women’s service in the Armored Corps before November, following several complaints from soldiers.

Currently, female soldiers can serve in the tanks of the Border Defense Corps of the Israeli army, within an all-female company of the mixed-gender Caracal light infantry battalion, which operates along the Egyptian border. However, they do not participate in combat behind enemy lines.

The experimental pilot program within the Armored Corps, which the Israeli army had previously deemed unfeasible, was initially planned for 2024.

Its launch was postponed twice due to the war. The Israeli army recently stated that it plans to launch it in November 2026.

In a decision issued on Monday, following a 2020 request demanding that the Israeli army open more combat positions to female recruits, the High Court ruled that “the Israeli army is also required to ensure, to the extent possible, equality of opportunity between men and women regarding access to combat positions.”

The Court determined that the Israeli army must open the trial program for the Armored Corps to women in November 2026, without any further delays.
