Mid-Ohio Valley Forecast: Summerlike heat, scattered storm chances

The Mid-Ohio Valley is in for a summer preview this week, with highs climbing from the upper 70s Monday into the mid- to upper 80s by midweek, forecasters said.

A persistent southerly flow is expected to keep temperatures unseasonably warm through Friday, with only scattered showers and thunderstorms.

The best chances for rain are Tuesday morning, Thursday and late Saturday, when a cold front could bring more widespread showers and storms into Sunday and knock temperatures back down.

Wood County Commission opens bid to outfit new sheriff’s cruisers

The Wood County Commission opened a bid Monday to equip five new sheriff’s office cruisers with emergency gear, including radios, warning lights and sirens.

Miller Communications of Parkersburg submitted the only bid, totaling just over $47,000.

Sheriff Rick Woodyard said the bid covers essentials such as radio programming, fire extinguishers and flashlights so the vehicles can be put into service as soon as they are delivered. Commissioners are expected to vote on the bid at a future meeting.

Hope Scholarship applications top 20,000 after eligibility expansion

More than 20,000 students have applied for the Hope Scholarship after West Virginia expanded eligibility to all children in the state, Treasurer Larry Pack said.

The total already exceeds the roughly 15,000 students approved for full funding in the 2025-26 school year, according to Pack, who chairs the Hope Scholarship Board.

Officials said more than 11,800 applicants are returning recipients and more than 8,000 are new students.

The deadline for new students to receive full funding for the 2026-27 school year is June 15, and the scholarship amount is $5,435.62, officials said.

Former POW Jessica Lynch reflects on rescue of U.S. airman after Iran shootdown

Former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch said the recovery of two U.S. airmen after Iran shot down an American fighter jet earlier this month stirred memories of her own captivity in Iraq more than two decades ago.

U.S. forces recovered the second F-15E crew member late Saturday, two days after the first was located, according to the report. Lynch said hearing the airmen were missing “hit close to home†and brought back the fear and uncertainty she experienced in 2003.

She credited improvements in tracking technology and specialized teams for helping bring both airmen to safety.
