PEN International and the Inge Feltrinelli Prize for Writing as Resistance

PEN International, founded in 1921, is committed to defending the freedom of expression for authors around the world, in the face of threats to their writings, their security, and sometimes their lives.

Currently, PEN International has collaborated with the Inge Feltrinelli Prize to introduce a new accolade in the form of a special mention. This award was presented for the first time in November 2026, during the BookCity Milano event. The PEN-Inge Feltrinelli Writing as Resistance Award will honor an author who uses writing as a tool for civic engagement and human rights advocacy.

Authors of all nationalities are eligible for this award, selected initially by an international committee. The recipient will then be chosen by a jury comprising notable figures from PEN International and the Inge Feltrinelli Prize.

“Partnerships like this serve as a reminder that the defense of freedom of expression is not a solitary battle,” emphasized Burhan Sonmez, president of PEN International, in a statement. “With the Inge Feltrinelli Prize, we stand by authors who risk everything to combat injustices and defy oppressions. We honor the brave voices, often overlooked, and ensure their words cross borders to reach all communities.”

Carlo Feltrinelli, president of the eponymous publishing group, stressed the importance of protecting and encouraging elements that contribute to the relevance of a culture: a critical space, often on the margins, yet vital in challenging the dominant narrative of those in power.

Established in honor of Inge Schüenthal Feltrinelli, who passed away in September 2018, the “Inge Feltrinelli Prize: Telling the World, Defending Rights” recognizes authors and young writers for works that expose abuses and advocate for civil and human rights. Three awards, in different categories, were first presented at the beginning of 2023.
