Receiving the French ambassador to Vietnam, Olivier Brochet, on May 13 in Hanoi, Vice Minister Nguyễn Trường Thang emphasized that defense cooperation, an essential pillar of bilateral relations, had been substantially and effectively strengthened, particularly in exchanges at all levels, defense industry, training, and participation in UN peacekeeping operations. These results align with agreements reached by the leaders and defense ministries of both countries, as well as signed cooperation documents.

Highlighting the strong potential for further cooperation development, the Vice Minister suggested that both parties continue to effectively implement cooperation orientations and annual programs, with a focus on various key areas such as strengthening exchanges at all levels, including high-level contacts, signing cooperation documents, training, and maritime security. He also expressed hope that Ambassador Olivier Brochet would continue to support the development of more effective and substantial defense cooperation between the two countries.

Nguyễn Trường Thang took the opportunity to thank France for the scholarships provided to the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense for officer and staff training, language studies, and short-term courses. He expressed the wish for France to continue these programs and consider offering university and postgraduate training opportunities in areas needed by Vietnam. He also invited France to continue sending military personnel for international defense officer training and Vietnamese language courses in Vietnam.

Furthermore, the Vice Minister invited leaders from the French Ministry of Armed Forces and defense companies to participate in the third Vietnam International Defense Expo 2026, scheduled to take place in Hanoi in December.

In response, Ambassador Olivier Brochet reaffirmed France’s desire to enhance defense cooperation with Vietnam in line with the global strategic partnership and the shared vision of the two countries’ leaders, contributing to peace, stability, and development worldwide.

Ambassador Olivier Brochet extended an invitation to the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense to participate in the Eurosatory World Defense and Security Exhibition scheduled to be held in France in June.
